Swagger

Pink Think: “Some folks look at me and see a certain swagger, which in Texas is called ‘walking.'” – George W. Bush

I’ve come to a familiar place in my WIP (work in progress), the dreaded middle slump. It had been going so well until this chapter where I introduce a somewhat scientific subplot about a disease, and I just feel a little out of depth. It’s like putting my characters on stage bluffing through their dialogue. I produced maybe two paragraphs yesterday. I don’t know why I write about ghosts easily, but this medical passage is a humdinger.

Really, what I need is a little more confidence. In myself, in my story, in my ability to pull off this magician’s trick. A little more swagger.

The other night I went and provided background Christmas music for a high school festival of lights. It was a big step for me since I quit my rock band and decided to go solo. What I learned there is that people don’t really care how long you’ve been doing something if you have the swagger to pull it off. I got there, played like I belonged, and had a lot of fun.

That’s what I need to do now with my writing. I need to get there, write like I belong, and have fun.

Speaking of fun.

Finished another installment of a story for my youngest’s fourth grade class. Once a month I go in, share the start of a story, and have them finish it. I love this short exercise. So far, I have been carrying over the same characters. There’s the teacher, the students, a class pet lizard, a new student-dragon, and the principal.

Short and sweet, and the freedom to just write goofy plotlines that the kids seem to be enjoying.
