Small Town Fourth of July

Pink Think: “My early childhood memories center around this typical American country store and life in a small American town, including 4th of July celebrations marked by fireworks and patriotic music played from a pavilion bandstand.” – Frederick Reines

Had a wonderful Fourth of July, did you?

Started out cheering on our two oldest in a 5k run. I was going to be in it, but I chickened out at the last minute. I didn’t want to be last, but now I know I should have done it anyway. Maybe next year.

Walked a few blocks to Main Street to add another chair to our saved spot for the parade while my husband took the kids where they needed to be. I love being able to just walk and feel safe, and talk to people I know along the way.

And the parade – a child’s delight! I am happy to admit I get in there like the rest of the kids, calling out for parade entries to throw candies and the promo shirt I never wear but give to my husband. Fun to see neighbors and friends in the parade. Afterwards, we picnicked at outdoor tables of a now-defunct restaurant which was right on main street. Got a few curious looks, just like that one time when I had the kids walk through a drive-through.

Just took it easy in the afternoon. I could have written more towards my WIP, but I chose not to. I was on holiday, after all. The family watched Around the World in 80 Days starring Jackie Chan, and I loved it. He’s so funny and the fighting/getaway scenes were exciting. Someday, my books will be turned into funny and wondrous movies like that! 🙂

We paused the movie to catch the fireworks. Found a spot that was perfect viewing. As the fireworks started, exploding directly above us without any of the smoke – such a grand feeling!

All in all a perfect small town July Fourth celebration.
