Refilling the Pot

Pink Think: “When I’m not in a writing crunch, I need lots of stuff coming into my head to compensate for what gets pulled out.” – Janet Evanovich

Last night, I did something unusual. I actually watched a Utah Jazz basketball game on TV without a pen, paper or AlphaSmart in front of me. I was just watching, for a change, just relaxing. The only drawback was, whenever the game got exciting, I would scream or shout, and my family would say, “Mo-om!” When the kids were babies, my husband had to take over holding them during basketball games because he was scared I was going to drop them.

I got a book recently through our Interlibrary Loan (I love our bookmobile!) by Janet Evanovich with Ina Yalof, called How I Write: Secrets of a Bestselling Author. Wonderful, amazing book. Irrevent and funny like Janet’s Stephanie Plum series.

As I was watching basketball last night, I thought of this quote of Janet’s:

“…just about everything I do and see and hear and smell somehow ends up in the pot. I go to malls, bars, theme parks, Stones concerts, wrestling matches, NASCAR races, bike rallies, weddings, and funerals, and I love supermarkets. It’s all good stuff.”

Recently, I’ve eased up on my writing schedule and have been able to take time out to do more physical/sensory things. I rode our horse, danced and played basketball. I also went major grocery shopping which I’d been dreading like the dentist, but it not only fed my spirit, it also fed my family!

How I would refill my pot:

Go to a Dierks Bentley concert.
Listen to Keith Urban or Rascal Flatts while driving on a highway.
Go to a Sanrio store and spend $10 on something I do not need.
Call two girlfriends and go get pedicures.
Go to a dance club with my husband.
Hitch a ride from a race car driver at the nearby race track.
Visit my sister in Ireland.
Go somewhere tropical and eat bananas foster or key lime pie.
Drive along the Oregon coast.
SCUBA dive at Utah’s Bonneville Sea Base.
Go to Disneyland.
