I was paying for groceries at Wal-Mart when the cashier looks at my I.D.

“Is Y your maiden name?” she aks of my middle name.

“Yes,” I say.

“There’s a lady at X-College and she teaches math.”

I ask her if it’s my mom, Mrs. Y. She teaches math at a college.

“Yes!” the cashier says. “I love her! She’s such a good teacher, and she’s so nice, too!”

This happens to me all the time. Strangers telling me about my mom, and how wonderful a math teacher she is. It feels weird that my mother exists in a different world than the one I know her to be just “Mom”.

The irony of this is when I was younger I didn’t do very well in math, and I wish SHE had been my teacher.

What would YOU want people to say to your children about you?

For me, I would want people to say, “Her book scared the daylights out of me!” Or, “I’ll never forget her kindness.”
