Ladies First 2

Pink Think: “The more you act like a lady, the more he’ll act like a gentleman.” – Sydney Biddle Barrows

This past week on NPR, a panel of men and women were interviewed about an IMPORTANT issue. The moderator asked a question, then said, “Ladies first.” A woman said, “That has got to stop!” Presumably, the moderator’s gallantry raised her hackles.

How sad.

I grew up on a steady diet of ’50s movies (my dad let me stay up and watch old b&w movies on TV) where women wore little white gloves and pretty dresses, and men like Cary Grant took off their hats and stood up when ladies entered the room.

I suppose you can say I am a modern woman who appreciates gallantry like a 50’s girl (well, minus the little white gloves).

I love it when my husband opens a door – of a car or building – for me. I love it when he lets me order off a menu first. I love it when he steps aside to introduce me to his associates. I love it when he treats me like a LADY. And I love it that my son, who is 10, rushes to my car door to beat his dad to helping me out.

I asked my husband why he does what he does. He said, “Respect.”

When women complain that gentlemen are treating them like ‘ladies’, how EXACTLY do they want to be treated then?
