Pink Think: “I tend to think you’re fearless when you recognize why you should be scared of things, but do them anyway.” – Christian Bale

Few days ago, I accepted the assignment of writing a couple of stories for the Deseret News related to the motor racing industry. Other than knowing cars are supposed to go fast, I feel the way I do before each story I write: clueless! Especially when I called my interviewee and he said his car is getting a lot of media attention from outlets like the Wall Street Journal. And there I was, little me, non-racing-expert trying to get an interview.
I’m a teensy weensy scared.
Scratch that. I’m a lot scared!
Take a deep breath, Jewel. You can do this. You’ve written about subjects you didn’t know a thing about.
Yes, yes. I need to remember that.

Speaking of fear, last night I read a novel that deserves the praise it has been getting since it came out a few weeks ago: Angela Morrison’s Taken By Storm. Click here for a great review.
This book, with its raw honesty, is fearless. I had a hard time writing about the Muslim faith in my historical novel, worrying about how Muslims might perceive it, I can only imagine how gut-wrenching it was for Angela to write the sensual scenes she did in her book. (I thought they were done in taste, but definitely recommend upper teens on-up as reading age). The main protagonist is of the same faith as me, LDS (Mormon), who struggles with her physical attraction to a non-member. I loved this book! It made me think, it made me laugh, it made me cry.
I hope my own written works will reflect courage.

I will be playing the keyboard and singing at my next band practice on Thursday. Just the opening notes of Lean on me. Early on in my piano-learning years as an adult student, I seized up and forgot how to play a piano recital song. I have a little, ahem, performance anxiety.
Self-talk: You can do it! You can do it!
