Pink Think: “The world needs your originality. You just need to grow into it.” – from the movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
First of all, kudos to my writing pals Karen Hoover (her debut novel The Sapphire Flute is coming out in March and will be reviewed by yours truly on March first) and Don Carey (for signing a contract with Cedar Fort for a book I had the honor of betaing). Congratulations!
Now on to the post!

Some days, I feel like I am writing about the eating disorders of lemurs in Botswana.
That is, my novels usually are set in a place relatively unfamiliar to most people (Philippines)and un-sexy topics that do not have anything to do with what is “hot” out there like vampires, post-apocalypse (whew, that’s a word to spell) or “fill in the blank”.
I have some ideas rattling around in my brain that, to be honest, if you boil it down, I was curious to explore because “hey, it’s more commercially viable!”
But I always keep going back to my touchstone subjects.

Last night I watched Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs with my family. What a movie! If you want a good, laugh-out-loud, clever movie with zany characters I suggest you rent it.
I thought I would be craving food afterwards, but the movie actually made me feel like swearing off junk food for a week. Another bonus.

The male and female protagonists of Cloudy questioned who they were and the value of their originality. In doing so, they ended up being someone they were not and were unhappy.
In much the same way, each of us, whether we write, paint, or create, has something unique to offer. To use the food analogy, without each of our unique contributions, our feast would be bland and boring.
Color is good. Variety is good. Unique is good.
Be original and proud of it!
