Striking Gold

Pink Think: “Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it and, above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light.” – Joseph Pulitzer

Finished the first draft of a race car article I am working on for the Deseret News. A huge relief, because I have been wondering how to shape pages upon pages of interview notes into a 600-word article.

Ever since I began writing fiction seriously a few years ago, I find myself writing articles much like I would a short story. Even news stories have character, plot, motivation and detail. Much more interesting than the usual who-what-where-why-how dry treatment. Usually, it’s about people.

The key is to just start writing and looking for possibilities in the bare bones. And when a story begins to show itself, it’s like striking gold.

Received the good news over the weekend that I won third place in the LDStorymakers Conference First Chapter Contest (historical fiction category) for my novel Girl From Gurian!!

For a complete list of winners, click here.

I’ll polish my newspaper piece and then return to editing Girl From Gurian. I’ve also resurrected my paranormal novel Ghost Moon Night and submitted the first three chapters to an editor I met at LDStorymakers.
