Reformed Valentine

Pink Think: “I have many valentines. My mom and my sister and my directors. I got calls from all of them. And my friends. I respect what Valentine’s Day stands for because it is about love.” – Michelle Trachtenberg

I admit, I used to be one of those people who, mention Valentine’s Day, and I run the other way screaming. Or when my kids come home with their valentine list, I grit my teeth.

Until about ten years ago, my husband and I used to get gussied up, line up for hours at a nice restaurant, and have a “romantic” dinner with half the world’s population.

So about that same time, we decided we would celebrate Valentine’s day on another day of that week, rather than February 14. For a while, it worked out great. We could always count on getting a babysitter and I didn’t feel like a lemming.

But then something never felt right. It felt like we were celebrating Christmas on December 23.

So for this Valentine’s Day, I told my husband we were going to dinner and get in some dancing, no ifs ands or buts.

“Okay,” my husband said, “find out where we can go dancing.”

We recently ate lunch at a local café about twenty minutes away from here, from a recommendation of a friend. Great food, homey atmosphere, and the most divine blueberry pie. As we paid for our meal, my husband noticed a sign-up for their Valentine’s Dinner: dinner, dessert, drink and dancing.

Both of us perked up with interest. We signed up, and that’s what we’ll be doing on Valentine’s Day.

I’m excited to dance again. Maybe they’ll even have some country music. I’m willing to give this holiday another chance.

I was talking to some girlfriends this week and I said, all cheery, “So, what are you going to do for Valentine’s Day?”

Someone said, “It’s really not a big deal for me anymore.”

“We don’t do anything.”

The conversation awkwardly shifted to how someone’s child was enjoying kindergarten. I tried really hard not to let this dampen my enthusiasm.

Happy Valentine’s Day, however you celebrate it (or not)!

(Psst, am I the only one that feels like Valentine’s Day is still worth celebrating?)
