Power of Story

Pink Think: “There’s a great tradition in storytelling that’s thousands of years old, telling stories about kings and their palaces, and that’s really what I wanted to do.” – Aaron Sorkin

Last night, something amazing happened. I’ve been revising this manuscript and had come to a scene where the protagonist confronts her Sultan-father about a decision he made. I honestly had no clue how to proceed when the father said, “Juliza, why don’t you and I sit down? I have a story to tell you.”

My writerly jaw dropped because I didn’t know his backstory until now. So I let him talk. And talk. I was giddy with excitement to hear his voice. I’ll have to try this with the villain.

I love reading books where a narrator says, “I have a story to tell you” and proceeds to draw me into their world, their mind, their heart. It makes me feel like a child again, settling in for a bedtime story. I hold my breath, and listen to the flow of words, to the images painted in my mind. I especially love adventure stories within a story, like in the movie Secondhand Lions.

When you write, have you ever have a character step forward and tell you their story?

Have you read a book recently where you started reading and couldn’t put it down, it was such a good story?
