Yesterday, I conducted my first in a series of interviews I will be doing about motor racing. I met with a really helpful p.r. person, J, at the sports park. How to dress? I settled for jeans and a nice sweater. I was glad I did because J was wearing jeans, too. Not a suit and tie kind of place considering the money that goes through that place.
I got three hours’ worth (we spoke over lunch and a tour, too) of sports car and superbike information, much more than I would probably use for my stories and then some. But it was fascinating, a good tutorial on the industry. For instance, did you know that Michael Jordan owns a superbike team? J was, as he said his colleagues call him, a wikipedia on racing. He could tell me who won what year with what car or motorcycle.
I got to sit in a silver-aluminum Shelby Cobra and he took my picture above. I don’t get fast cars, but apparently Cobras are cool in racing history.
All in all, a very productive interview, one that I hope is a harbinger of a good working relationship for a long time. I admitted to being a complete novice to the topic, and he helped me generously.
We talked about maybe, in the future, he could arrange for me to be a passenger in a NASCAR car sometime in July. Normally, I don’t like going fast, but hey, I won’t turn down that opportunity, if I were offered it.
