NaNoWriMo Day 9: Researching as you go

NaNoWriMo Day 9Researching as you go

Today’s stats: 20,102 words so far. 10,003 words today.

I realized as I picked my graphic that it looks extremely dated. As authors, we live in a wonderful world of media. For this book I am working on, about a dog training cowboy, I have been watching a lot of Youtube videos.

A nice plus to my research is, I am able to address some issues that are happening in real life with my own golden retriever puppy. I am learning, for example, to teach her the “down” command. And we definitely still need to work on the “heel” command. (I’ll just be glad if she wouldn’t pull.)

A decade ago when I started with historical fiction, I would go to the library and check out books. There were some sources online, too, so that was very helpful. But nowadays, one could even look at historic sites online and get a good sense of place.

Even though I pride myself in doing the research for a book, I often start stories without knowing everything. The thing is, I don’t know what I don’t know until I am writing the draft. So I make things up as I go along, sometimes marking the spots for further research. And then I keep writing.

Thankfully, this topic is something I know a bit about–the misbehaving dog anyway. So I don’t feel like it’s too far-fetched.

Write what you know, they say. I think it’s more like, write what you want to know.

How is it going with your research / drafting?
