How has the first week of NaNo gone for you?
I remember those first few NaNo’s I participated in. I divided 50,000 words by 30 days and aimed to write that much each day: 1,666 words. Some days I wrote more than others, but often I fell short and had to make it up. When I did good, I marked that day on a calendar with a sticker.
As I’ve been able to increase my daily output by sprinting with other authors, sometimes to 5K a day, I’ve allowed myself breaks. I don’t write on Sundays. Saturdays get so busy I don’t count on that day being highly-productive.
Although it’s very tempting to write constantly, try to rest and recharge between writing bouts. Instead of staying up, get some sleep. Even though the wordcount matters, having quality output will save you revision time later.
Along with NaNo, I am in the throes of preparing my daughter’s wedding in mid-December. I had been putting off making her invitation, as I told my hubby, “because of NaNo.” He said, “NaNo can wait.”
I might have taken offense in the past, but it was a good reminder to me of what’s truly important. I made the invitation on Canva AND I still got some words.
My husband has come to accept that, every November, I burrow into my writing hole and rarely emerge. But yesterday, I went with him to look at a car and on impulse invited him to try a new restaurant for lunch. It was fun, and gave me some much needed balance.
Have a beautiful Sunday, everyone!
