If It Weren’t For Mom

My eight year old came out today to breakfast saying, in wonder-filled voice, that she had a dream I let her have a kitten.

(Over the years, I have said yes to two dogs, yes to three horses, yes to one fish, but I am drawing the line on cats. They are cute but I don’t want the cat smell in my house. Conversely, I don’t want an outdoor cat that would leave presents for the neighbors. The kids once said, “If it weren’t for Mom, we’d have lots of animals by now.” It’s true.)

She looked so happy that I almost said, “Sure, I’ll let you have a kitten.”

Instead, I held her on my lap and asked her what the kitten looked like, if it was a boy or girl (a girl) and what our dogs would do with the kitten when they meet.

She said, “Someone in my class got a puppy and a kitten at the same time.”

I laughed. “So we should get a puppy, too?”

She nodded and I just hugged her.

But I still won’t let my kids get a kitten. Sigh. Am I being a mean mommy?
