Pink Think: ” If you can’t get a compliment any other way, pay yourself one.” – Mark Twain
I have been writing for Filipinas, a San Francisco-based magazine with a world-wide readership, since 2001. Usually, after one of my articles gets published, I read the letters to the editor to see if mine gets a mention. I’ve never gotten one. Until now.
A letter from Marianne Villanueva in this month’s issue reads:
“I have subscribed to Filipinas Magazine since the very first issue. I’ve watched it develop and grow over the years. I’ve even written for it during the early years. I’m writing to laud the article, ‘New Growth, New Hope’ (April 2008) by Jewel Punzalan Allen. Not only was it highly informative, but as the title indicated, it gave me new hope that we can find ways to preserve the Philippine eco-system, which has almost been destroyed by centuries of neglect. Thank you for bringing this issue to the fore. Thanks, too, to the author, whose balanced and concise writing was a great pleasure to read.”
(I’d post a link to the article, but the only one available is a database you have to pay to subscribe to. But you can check out one of my earliest articles here and my most recent one here.)
Wow, my first public fan mail!
Congrats on the fan mail. Judging from what I have heard about you from Shari and Karen and the fact that you won at LDS Storymakers (that was you wasn’t it? I was there on Saturday and sat next to Karen and Shari and I am pretty sure they introduced me to you), this first letter is just the beginning…
(Great blog! I’ll be back.)
Way to go, Jewel. That has to feel great!

Don, thanks. I know, it’s kind of an itsy bitsy thing in the whole realm of things, but yes, life’s good!
Welcome cheffie-mom and thanks.
Shari, thanks for being such a good beta reader (whatever ‘beta’ means). Tell Jill I am really not stalking her (where is she shopping tomorrow?).
