He Says, She Says 5

Pink Think: “The concept of two people living together for 25 years without a serious dispute suggests a lack of spirit only to be admired in sheep.” – A.P. Herbert

My husband and I were on our nightly walk the other day when we compared notes about vacations we would enjoy.

He wants to fish in Nome, Alaska (which he will be doing in September).

I want to people-watch outside a South American cantina while listening to hot-blooded music. Maybe dance a little. Actually, a lot.

He wants to travel to Indonesia, Nepal, or Mongolia.

Asia? *Shrug* I want to go to Europe… to Madrid, Spain, and trace the footsteps of my ancestors, and dance to more hot-blooded music.

Mmm.

He loves to camp. I love to stay in hotels.

He loves to off-road the long, windy road. I like getting from point A to point B as quickly as possible.

He likes to get away from people. I don’t mind the city.

Sometimes I wonder how two people with very disparate tastes could stay married for 16 years.

I think what saves us, what attracted us to each other while dating, was this: we are both open to new experiences, we both love adventure, and we aren’t too squeamish of eating strange things.

After some discussion, we eventually came up with four vacations we would BOTH enjoy:

1. a trek through the Gobi Desert (I think it sounds romantic, traveling on camels under a starry sky)
2. a trip to the Amazon (he wants to fish, I want to see the piranhas)
3. a visit to my sister in Ireland (she married an Irishman this past December)
4. island-hopping in the Philippines (mmm, heaven; I got to do this last year, and I can’t wait for my family to do the same someday soon)

Now we’re getting somewhere.

thank you for this post. i’ve been feeling down lately about some dear friends and family who’s marriages have ended because of things like this and other stupid things. i’ve been feeling down today, so it helped to see a bit of sunshine on the topic again.

Shari: Let’s go do a girl vacation sometime!

Don: Yes, TX is on my must-visit list.

Shanna: I thought of your husband when we passed Helper this past week :-).

Paulette: I know I have no real right to gripe since differences with regards to traveling seems pathetic compared to other issues. My husband and I have weathered deeper, more consequential things, and I thank God that instead of driving us apart, they have brought us closer together.
